Live Plants and snails.

I always wanted a tank with live plants and fish. I have tried it twice and have failed cause the tank ended up getting infested with snails which I hate. My tank now has only plastic plants in it and I seem not to be able to get rid of snails. I went out and bought four clown loaches yesterday 11-20-09. I don`t know if I am buying my plants from the wrong place or this is something I have to deal with to have live plants. Other tanks I see don`t seem to have snails. Not alot any way. Open for suggestions.

Leaking Tank

Definitely not a Fun Day! Fortunately, we were at home when the tank (35 gallon started to leak. After a mad scramble to relocate the fish to a pail and empty the tank, we found that no damage was done to the hardwood floor. The tank was brand new about a month ago and the folks at the pet store are going to send it away for repairs. The leak was right at the bottom front left corner about 4 inches over. The lady at the counter said that there wasn't much luck at repairing a tank of that size. Have any of you experienced tank repair? And if so, how successful were they? A bit disappointing to say the least. meanwhile a very large goldfish and a large fancy are "in prison" in my old 5 gallon tank. Fortunately, I kept it.

Looking to upgrade tank size

I have been dealing with a lot of smaller tank sizes over the course of a few years and I feel I am ready to move up... Question being.. To what size?

One of my biggest fears is improperly equipping my tank with necessary components.

I understand the concepts of most of it. Filter, Plants, Co2, Filter media, Substrate, Ph, Nitrates, etc. But I have a feeling all of that becomes a lot more intense in terms of caring for it, especially when it comes to selecting the proper equipment for max efficiency.

For starters, I can't decide between Acrylic or Glass for the tank material.

I have about... 3 Feet of room to place it, give or take a few more inches. So I was considering something in the 30gal-50g Tall range.

Canister filter (Fluval) etc..

Just need to focus on the basics right now and figure out a proper tank size.

sudden fear of light

Hoping someone can shed some light on this issue. I have had a 29 gal tank set up since the beginning on august. The water parameters are as follows: ammonia 0/nitrite 0/nitrate 10(6 from tap)/pH 7.6/GH 11/KH 5. 3 blackskirt tetras were added 2nd week of september, after initial fishless cycle. since they were the first addition there was no quarientine. shortely after interduction noticed ICH. innitially treated with maracide per instructions, treatment was inneffective and was directed by mardel to use coppersafe. Changed 50% water as instructed and began coppersafe. Ich cleared up in 5 days, maintained 1.5-2 PPM for total 21 days before discontinuing treatment of new water used for partial water changes. 35%-40% water changes are performed weekly. All 3 fish recovered well, regained appatite, and seemed to be dooing well, one took about a week longer then the others to regain energy and appatite. All was well for a couple weeks when 5 nights ago all 3 were swimming under the 36 watts of actinic blue/10000K light that has been on a 12 hour cycle since the tank was first set up, before I had any fish. I was sitting on my couch enjoying my fish, and eating a snack, I looked up at the tank between bites of pie and noticed that the fish were suddenly huddled
strangely close to the bottom against the front glass looking very stressed. I stood up to take a better look and they started darting all over the tank, and eventually all took cover in a ditch behind a dense clump of plastic plants. They were completely shocked, twitching and on highg alert. a few minutes later the lights were due to shut off, and afterwords the fish relaxed and resumed normal activity. the next morning they were fine before the tank lights went on. no flashing, no twitching, fins erect, playful with each other, no spots or anything abnormal. Then the lights went on and they freeked out, same as the night before. I tried to leave them alone thinking they would relax after a while, when i returned they were acting the same as when I left 5 hours before. I shut off the light and within 10 minutes they were fine. Now it has been 5 days and they are still completely shocked by any amount of light besides ambient room lighting. the room is well lit by the time the tank light goes on in the morning, I have tried a different light above the tank(mutch dimmer) with the same results. I tried to partially shade the tank with some opaque material under the light, same results. but while the tank light is off they seem very happy. My ph is a little high but it has been stable since setup. I would like to resume stockng, but not until i understand whats up with these guys. seems strange that they would change behavior so abruptly? ayone have any ideas. btw there are rocks, and plants to hide in.

Do you feed earthworms to your fish? I know some people always do and others say it is harmful to the fish and messes the tank water up. I feed my Severum earthworms sometimes, as a treat.

What am I missing?

I am looking for some help or insite into what is happening in my tank

[b]Background

We had 10 common goldfish in an outside pond. They were bought as feeders. As ponds freeze to the bottom around here, we brought 7 of them inside in a 5 gallon tank. They then went back oudoors for the second summer to clean up the mosquito wigglers. They did a great job, growing to 4 inch size with very heavy bodies. The new tank is a 35 gallon unit with a top trickling filter. We down sized to 4 and added a black fancy goldfish. My problem is that I can't keep the tank clear. Even after 50% water change out, the visibility is only about 3/4 of the way thrrough. I suction the bottom, do not overfeed (I think), and am forced to change water every 2 to 3 days. When we first started the tank up, I had nitrates and ammonia, but this has returned to zero. The Ph is stable at 7.6. I can eliminate most of the green colloid with heavy doses of polymer, but this tends to plug the filter. The fish appear to be healthy and happy.

I think the answer is to drop to 2 goldfish and the exotic one, but am I missing anything? Would a second layer of coarse filter and carbon filter help? Or am I wasting my time?

Any comments would be appreciated.
